Are Real Madrid Done with Transfers? Which Areas of the Squad Still Need Strengthening?

Real Madrid have signed six players so far in what has been a relatively busy window.

But it was quite clear that they wanted at least one more, as they were keen on getting Manchester City’s Rodri before Barcelona stole in and became the player’s preference.

Are Madrid done in the window then? They appear to be well set in defence and attack but it is clear that midfield is still an area of concern.

Some within the club are reportedly worried about their ability to control games in the centre of the pitch, despite having Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

Many supporters and indeed many within the club believe there is still a gap in the squad where Toni Kroos used to be before he retired in 2024.

However, the latest word from sources at Madrid is that the club will not make any more signings unless a player leaves. Madrid believe their 25-man squad is complete, with at least two options for every position, and there is no indication at present that any of their midfielders wants to move.

What about Bernardo Silva?

Madrid signed Bernardo Silva this summer on a free transfer from Manchester City, but he does not have that Kroos profile, preferring to operate further forward with close interplay rather than providing searching long passes.

He also is not the sort of midfielder to be relied on to set the tempo, however good he was at covering nearly every blade of grass for City to initiate the attack.

Mourinho had personally pushed for Silva’s arrival but he continued to ask for another midfielder after the deal was completed. The fact that Madrid also made a move for Rodri despite no midfielder leaving would suggest that is not a hard limitation for them. It might simply be a question of finding the right fit.

Rodri would have been that fit and there was disappointment both within the club and among the fanbase when Barcelona intercepted the move.

How much have Madrid spent and can those players deliver?

Madrid have spent around €240m on six players this summer, although the quality and age of those players might be cause for debate.

Marc Cucurella, despite his successes with Spain at Euro 2024 and this summer’s World Cup, has hardly ever played well with the consistency to suggest he could be a difference maker for Madrid in the mould of Marcelo.

Ibrahima Konate was signed on a free and put on significant wages that Liverpool were not prepared to give him. He will be relied on by Mourinho but he certainly did not pull up trees in his last season at Liverpool, notably described by his manager Arne Slot as always being on “the crime scene” when it came to errors at the back.

Carlos Espi has much to prove after joining from Levante, and Yan Diomande is a player Madrid clearly overpaid for, although if he delivers what is expected on the right wing, he might prove to be the club’s signing of the summer.
