Defender backs the club to have “a lot of success in the coming years”
Josko Gvardiol has signed a new contract that will keep him at Manchester City until 2031.
The 24-year-old reached an agreement with City before the World Cup and signed the deal after returning to Manchester on Monday. The contract also contains an option for a further year that can be activated by the club.
The extension comes as City continue planning for their next phase under Enzo Maresca, following Pep Guardiola’s departure after almost a decade in charge.
Gvardiol has been seriously affected by injuries but his quality is incontestable. Fit and firing, he can be a top player for City. The club view the Croat, alongside Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Abdukodir Khusanov, as key figures for the future under Enzo Maresca. Foden and Khusanov agreed fresh terms last week, while Haaland signed a nine-and-a-half-year contract in January 2025.
Gvardiol said after the announcement: “As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted.
“The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one – and the club provide absolutely everything for players. It’s the best club in the world to be at.
“I have felt so much love and respect during my three years here and I don’t take that for granted.
“The players we have here are amazing. This is a world-class squad that is young and full of potential. I truly believe we will have a lot of success in the coming years.”
City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, said the defender had established himself among the leading players in his position.
“Josko epitomises what we want in our defenders – he can play multiple positions, is quick, strong and when he attacks he does it superbly. He is exceptional,” Viana said.
“But the way he conducts himself is also very impressive. This is a young man determined to be the best he can be – an approach that is totally aligned with our overall vision.”
