As Barcelona turn their interest towards the French centre-forward, Fulltime Herald looks at why and what he could bring
One name popping up on the attacking list of several top clubs this summer is Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi.
Arsenal’s interest has been an open secret since at least the final weeks of the Premier League last season. Manchester City have also signalled their interest and are ready to pursue a deal.
And now Barcelona have joined the race. But why, what could he bring, and what might he cost?
The first thing is that there are not a lot of options in the centre-forward market. Not this summer at least. Barcelona have made Julian Alvarez their prime target to replace Robert Lewandowski in the No 9 position after the Pole left the club at the expiry of his contract last season, but the Argentine is also being targeted by Real Madrid and Arsenal.
Barcelona may be the player’s choice destination, but Atletico Madrid have made it absolutely clear that they will not entertain any interests from any club. The player does have a release clause in his contract, but the €500m sum is far beyond what Barcelona, or indeed any club, could realistically pay for him.
Having conceded that signing the Argentine will be a mountain to climb, at least this summer, the Catalan club are now pivoting to Kroupi.
The France U-21 international joined Bournemouth only last summer for €15m, but so much has his stock risen, and so mad has the market gone, that the word out there is the Cherries will be expecting a fee in the region of €100m.

What can Kroupi Offer Barcelona?
Kroupi offers significant goal threat, shot frequency and all-round penalty-box threat. He scored 13 goals for Bournemouth in the Premier League last season, only two of them penalties, and he had a total non-penalty xG (expected goals) of 6.77 per game.
So he gets himself in good positions in the box and he can convert them. He can also take shots from both close and long range, which increases his overall goal threat, keeping it in the 96th percentile when compared to his peers across Europe, according to stats collected by the Athletic.
Kroupi also works incredibly hard off the ball and is very capable on the press, a quality that suits Barcelona’s style of play. Hansi Flick cherishes forwards who can press without the ball, as he considers that his first line of defence and the key to his entire high-line strategy. It was a key reason why Barcelona declined to sign Marcus Rashford permanently from Manchester United this summer. For all that he offered Barcelona on the ball, the England forward was rather poor off the ball.
Although Kroupi is only 20 years old, he also has significant experience in top-level football having played one full season in Ligue 1 and another in the Premier League just last term.
It is clear what Barcelona see in the forward and why they are joining the race to sign him. The question is whether they can fend off interest from competing clubs.
