Midfielder speaks on new contract, top three footballing moments, and ambition for next season
Dominik Szoboszlai is thrilled to commit his future to Liverpool and wants to “be an example” at the club, after signing a new contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2031.
The agreement follows months of talks between Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, and the player’s representatives. Szoboszlai had entered the final two years of his previous deal and acknowledged on several occasions last season that negotiations had made little progress.
The 25-year-old has become one of Liverpool’s most influential players since joining from RB Leipzig for £60m in 2023. He was player of the season last term, having scored 13 goals during a difficult final campaign under Arne Slot, making his renewal an important piece of business for the club with new head coach Andoni Iraola having come in.

Szoboszlai said signing the extension is a highlight of his career. “It’s maybe my biggest day,” he told Liverpool’s website. “There are a couple in front of it, probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course, but in my football career, I can say this is in the top three.”
The Hungary captain has established himself as a central figure in Liverpool’s midfield and has also been viewed as a potential future club captain. Questions over his long-term future had grown after his comments about the slow progress of contract discussions, but the new agreement removes those worries.
Szoboszlai said his ambitions at Liverpool remain unchanged and believes there is still more to come from his performances.
“I think I can do even better,” the Hungarian said. “I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid – that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now. I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.
“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same. I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League.”
