Tottenham have agreed a deal worth up to £100 million to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, shattering the club’s transfer record for the second time this week.
Tottenham Hotspur are set to complete the biggest signing in the club’s history after agreeing a deal worth up to £100 million for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Tottenham have reached an agreement that will see them pay an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons.

The move comes after Tottenham’s opening offer of around £80 million was rejected by Newcastle. Rather than walking away, the North London side returned with a significantly improved proposal that has now convinced the Magpies to sanction the sale.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi is understood to have played a key role in the pursuit. The Italian coach has admired Tonali for several years, having first identified his compatriot as a top midfield target during his time in charge of Sassuolo when the player was emerging as one of Serie A’s brightest talents.
Tonali’s arrival will see Tottenham break their transfer record for the second time in the same week. Earlier, Spurs agreed an £85 million deal to sign Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, only to surpass that figure days later with their blockbuster move for the Italy international.
The 26-year-old attracted interest from several Premier League rivals during the transfer window. Both Manchester City and Arsenal monitored his situation closely, with admiration for the midfielder’s quality well established across the division.
Despite their interest, neither City nor Arsenal followed up with a formal bid, allowing Tottenham to move into pole position and ultimately secure an agreement with Newcastle for one of Europe’s most highly regarded central midfielders.
The signing represents another major statement from Tottenham as they continue reshaping their squad under De Zerbi.
