Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman defended his decision to use a defensive system against Morocco despite his side’s World Cup elimination on penalties.
Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has defended his tactical approach following his side’s dramatic World Cup exit to Morocco, insisting he has no regrets despite the criticism expected to follow. The Dutch were knocked out after losing 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Koeman surprised many by deploying a back five against Morocco, moving away from the traditional attacking philosophy that has long been associated with Dutch football. Although the tactic ultimately ended in defeat, the 62-year-old believes it gave his team the best chance of progressing.
The Dutch coach argued that the defensive setup significantly improved his side’s organisation compared to the group stage. While admitting his team sacrificed some attacking threat, he felt limiting Morocco’s chances was the correct strategy against one of the tournament’s most impressive teams.
“With this defensive approach, we gave away much less than we did during the group matches,” Koeman said after the defeat. “That was positive, but we were also less offensive.”
Koeman insisted he would make the same decision again if presented with the same situation. He argued that had Morocco not scored their dramatic late equaliser, his tactical choices would likely have been praised instead of questioned by critics.

“I also know that if Morocco hadn’t equalised with that late goal, there would be all sorts of compliments for me as the Dutch coach,” he explained. “Now, probably, I’m going to be criticised because I chose five defenders, but once again, I believe it was necessary.”
The former Barcelona manager also revealed that the tactical plan was discussed with the players before the match and that everyone agreed it offered the best chance of success. He stressed that decisions made inside the dressing room are based on detailed preparation rather than outside opinions.
Despite the painful elimination, Koeman remains convinced his strategy was the right one and says he will now take time to reflect on his future as Netherlands manager. “You can criticise me, and that’s your right,” he said. “But I’m with the team. I knew what needed to be improved, and if I had to do it again, I would do exactly the same.”
