The 2015/16 Premier League winners made the drop after achieving the unwanted feat of going nine consecutive home games without scoring

Leicester City’s return to the Premier League has ended in disappointment, as the club was officially relegated following a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored in the 76th minute to seal the Foxes’ fate, confirming their drop to the Championship with five matches remaining in the season.

With the loss Leicester secured an unwanted record, becoming the first top-flight team in England to go nine consecutive home games without scoring. This incredible drought contributed significantly to their relegation, as the team struggled to find form throughout the campaign.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have picked up only one victory in their last 18 matches, and have lost all of the previous 10.

Leicester defender Conor Coady said after the game, “Listen, we’ve not been good enough all year. We haven’t.

“If we look at today, I thought we played and we nullified Liverpool quite well, they’re a world-class side. But if we look back at the season, it hasn’t been anywhere near good enough from a club point of view.

“But we have to look at ourselves in the mirror. We have to now. What’s happened has happened and we have to try to put the club in a better position come the summer. That’s what we have to try and do.

“We took a bit of stick, we will keep on taking stick because it’s deservedly so. From minute one this season, we haven’t been able to fully compete in the Premier League. You need to be or it will eat you up and spit you out.

“It’s something we have to look at, because we’re devastated.”

In dropping to the Championship Leicester join Southampton, who were relegated in early April. Both were new arrivals in the Premier League this season. The third newly promoted side Ipswich are also in the relegation zone and are all but certain drop down.
