Club holding out for a fee in the region of £100m
Tottenham have seen a bid of about £75m for Sandro Tonali rejected by Newcastle.
The north-east club are reportedly holding out for a fee closer to £100m for the Italy midfielder.
Tonali has emerged as a leading target for Tottenham as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes his squad after last season’s Premier League relegation battle.
Newcastle are understood to prefer keeping the midfielder, who remains under contract for three more years with the club holding an option for an additional season, but there is increasing belief that the player is open to a move.
Tottenham have received encouragement that Tonali would be willing to join them, although they face potential competition from Manchester City. Arsenal also explored the possibility of a deal earlier this year.
Newcastle signed Tonali from AC Milan in a £55m transfer three years ago and are seeking a significant profit if they decide to sanction his departure. Their valuation reflects both his importance to the squad and the length of time remaining on his contract.
The rejected offer also shows Tottenham’s growing ambition in the transfer market. The proposed fee would have surpassed the club’s previous record outlay, the deal that brought Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth in 2024 for an initial £55m rising to £65m with add-ons.
Spurs have been aggressive in the market this summer, completing the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £51.8m and adding Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers.
