Club officials are in Spain’s World Cup finalising the deal before offering the winger a six-year contract
Liverpool are set to sign Spain winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna after triggering the 22-year-old’s £34.6m release clause.
The move will make Munoz the first arrival of the Andoni Iraola era at Anfield and addresses a priority position for Liverpool following Mohamed Salah’s departure at the end of last season.
The club are expected to pay the fee in two instalments, with sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football, Michael Edwards, leading negotiations.
Liverpool officials are in Atlanta, where Spain are based during the World Cup, to complete a medical before Munoz signs a six-year contract.
Strengthening the attack has been a central objective for Liverpool this summer. Hugo Ekitike is expected to miss the start of next season because of an Achilles injury, while Federico Chiesa could leave the club before the transfer window closes.
Munoz arrives after an impressive first season at Osasuna, where he scored seven goals in 36 appearances in all competitions. Known for his pace and direct running, he joined the club last summer from Real Madrid in a deal worth €5m.
The transfer represents a significant return for Madrid, who retained a 50% sell-on clause when allowing Munoz to leave. It means the Spanish giants are expected to receive €20m from Liverpool’s purchase.
Born in Catalonia, Munoz spent part of his youth career at Barcelona’s La Masia academy before moving to CF Damm and later joining Madrid as an 18-year-old. He made four senior appearances for Madrid, including two at last summer’s Club World Cup, before seeking regular first-team football elsewhere.
The winger’s progress has also been recognised at international level. He made his Spain debut in March, scoring against Serbia, and was selected by Luis de la Fuente for the World Cup squad, although he has yet to feature during the tournament.
