The Italian has come under intense scrutiny for performances that have supporters booing at their own club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has expressed his certainty that he still has the support of the club hierarchy.

The Blues are without an away win in the Premier League since December – a run of eight Premier League away games. At home, they have been booed at times by their own fans for frustrating performances. Some fans on social media have consequently called for his dismissal.

However, the embattled boss is still confident that his approach is the right one. In a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the match against Legia, Maresca called on fans to trust the club, before saying that it was evident from objective metrics that Chelsea are better off now than in the past three seasons.

Speaking to The Athletic about whether he still felt he had the club’s support, the Italian said: “Yeah, absolutely, yes.

“I tried to explain [on Wednesday], we cannot change the idea the day after. I said and if I need to, I’ll say it again – in the last two years, Chelsea has been zero times top four, top five. This season we spent all season, almost all season, top four, top five, Champions League spots.

“We are in a semi-final of a European competition. So why now we need to change something? I think I don’t have any doubt about what we are doing, in the way we are doing, and for different reasons.

“We had some bad moments or some setbacks, like tonight [against Legia Warsaw], during the season, for sure. But this, for me, makes us stronger for the future.”

The Chelsea boss is also positive about his side’s chances of finishing in the top five and claiming a spot in the Champions League next season.

“We lost a game,” he said. “The other clubs like Villa and Newcastle have more confidence around them but things in football can change quickly.

“Sunday [at Fulham], for us, is a final and can be a boost to reach our target.”
