PLUS: Interim boss confirms Casemiro has played his last match and won’t feature at the Amex
Michael Carrick says confirmation of his appointment as Manchester United head coach is “pretty much around the corner” as negotiations continue over the finer points of the deal.
Carrick has agreed two-year terms to take the role permanently, with the option of a further year, although an official announcement has yet to be made.
People close to the situation say the delay has centred on discussions over the makeup of his coaching staff, with assistants Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate expected to remain. United could formalise the appointment as early as Friday.
“I said the end of the season so we’re not far away,” Carrick said. “Clarity is pretty much around the corner. At this stage I can’t give you any more.”
Carrick will take charge of United for their final game of the campaign away to Brighton on Sunday, with his side already assured of a third-place finish and Champions League football. Brighton, meanwhile, remain in contention for European qualification.
United’s interim coach also confirmed Casemiro has played his last match for United following his farewell appearance in the home game against Nottingham Forest, and would therefore not be travelling to the Amex.
“I kind of decided last week would be his last game,” Carrick said. “He’s been fantastic. It was decided it could be a good time for him to finish.
“It felt like the right time for Case to finish. There is an element of balance with the last game. We’re not done, the season is not done, we’re really conscious of that.
“There is a real balance between trying new things and evolving. The biggest thing is we’re really conscious to respect this last game and what it stands for.”
