Chelsea are already reshaping their summer transfer plans following the appointment of Xabi Alonso, with new targets emerging in defence, midfield, attack and goalkeeping.

Chelsea’s transfer strategy is already beginning to evolve following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager. Although the Spaniard will not officially begin work until July 1st, preparations for the summer rebuild are already underway behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had identified Alonso as their priority target after the dismissal of Liam Rosenior, with the club’s hierarchy convinced that his tactical approach and reputation fit their long-term vision. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach is viewed as someone capable of attracting elite-level talent while also helping to stabilize the project.

Club officials believe Alonso’s standing in world football gives him an authority that previous managerial candidates lacked. While Rosenior had admirers internally after his work at Strasbourg, Chelsea felt Alonso’s pedigree as both a player and coach placed him on a different level.

The arrival of Alonso could also influence the futures of several key players already at the club. Chelsea are particularly keen to keep hold of Marc Cucurella, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer, with confidence growing that all three could flourish under the Spaniard’s guidance.

Chelsea are also expected to make major defensive changes this summer. Premier League defenders Maxence Lacroix, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi are all being monitored, while Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande and Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez remain highly rated by the club’s recruitment staff.

In goal, Chelsea are still assessing whether Robert Sanchez is the right long-term option between the posts. AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan remains a player of interest, although there is growing excitement around highly-rated Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders after his impressive loan spell at Strasbourg.

Midfield reinforcements are also being considered, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott emerging as one of the names under close observation. Chelsea are additionally expected to open talks over an improved long-term contract for Fernandez as they aim to secure the Argentine’s future at the club.

Further forward, Chelsea are expected to strengthen their attack. Sporting CP youngster Geovany Quenda is already set to arrive, while the club are still exploring options for a new striker. Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic has emerged as a possible target amid uncertainty surrounding his future in Turin, while Chelsea must also decide whether to retain Nicolas Jackson, who is valued internally at around £60 million.

With Alonso now central to Chelsea’s long-term rebuild, this summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of the club’s most important in recent years. The Blues are aiming to build a squad capable of consistently competing for major honours again, and Alonso is expected to play a key role in shaping that future.
