The visitors stunned Dortmund with an early breakthrough after just two minutes when Mahmoud Dahoud battled to keep possession near the edge of the box before laying the ball off for Can Uzun, who curled a brilliant finish into the far bottom corner.
Frankfurt’s dream start briefly lifted them above Freiburg into seventh place, but Dortmund gradually responded and began creating dangerous openings through Marcel Sabitzer and Samuele Inácio as the pressure mounted before half-time.
The equaliser eventually arrived when Julian Ryerson delivered a dangerous low cross from the right flank, allowing Serhou Guirassy to flick the ball into the top corner at the near post.
Dortmund completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time after Maximilian Beier picked out an unmarked Nico Schlotterbeck, with the defender squeezing a composed finish inside the far post to send the hosts into the break with the lead.
Frankfurt showed signs of improvement after the restart and thought they had found a route back into the contest when Fares Chaibi finished clinically past Gregor Kobel, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

The decisive moment came when Beier once again delivered from the left, this time setting up Samuele Inácio for his first Dortmund goal from close range, before substitute Jonathan Burkardt pulled one back late on after excellent work from Ansgar Knauff to set up a tense finish.
Despite Frankfurt’s late push, Dortmund held firm to secure second place for the fifth time in eight seasons and move beyond the 70-point mark for only the second time in seven years, while Frankfurt now face an anxious wait knowing a Freiburg victory on Sunday would end their hopes of returning to European competition.
