Real Madrid midfielder is understood to be on the club’s shortlist and Carrick is among top contenders for permanent role
Manchester United are monitoring Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as a potential summer signing as they look to strengthen their squad.
The France international is under contract at Madrid until 2028 and would reportedly cost around £70m. There is no indication that Real Madrid are willing to sell, but Tchouameni is understood to be on United’s shortlist, alongside Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Meanwhile, United’s decision over their next permanent manager is still open and the club are not expected to make a decision until the end of the season. Interim boss Michael Carrick is under consideration after making a strong case for himself with his performance in charge in the second half of the season.
Carrick took charge after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal early in January and has overseen a notable improvement in form. He has won eight of his 12 matches in charge, with two draws and two defeats, collecting 26 points from a possible 36. That run has lifted United from seventh to third in the Premier League, putting them close to Champions League qualification.
However, concerns remain over aspects of his team’s performance, not least the 2-1 home defeat to Leeds last week, where United were flat and went into half-time 2-0 down.
Carrick has played down his interest in the long-term role but is understood to be open to continuing. He has also been involved in discussions over transfer targets and pre-season planning.
United’s search for a new head coach includes several high-profile names. Sporting director Wilcox previously held talks with Thomas Tuchel before Erik ten Hag’s tenure was extended in 2024. Tuchel has since committed to England until 2028.
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is also of interest, but he too is under contract until 2028 and has not yet been approached by United.
