Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior criticises his players’ lack of desire and courage after a 3-0 defeat to Brighton

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior did not hold back in his assessment of his team following a crushing 3-0 defeat to Brighton, labelling the performance unacceptable and questioning the mentality of his players.

The Blues were outplayed at the Amex Stadium, with goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck sealing a damaging loss.

The result deepens Chelsea’s ongoing crisis, marking their fifth consecutive Premier League defeat without scoring, a run not seen at the club since 1912. It also leaves their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League hanging by a thread.

Rosenior’s frustration was evident as he addressed the media post-match, shifting the focus away from tactics and towards what he described as a lack of basic attributes. He insisted the defeat had little to do with systems or strategy, but rather the absence of desire, spirit, and courage on the pitch.

“I have defended the players before when it was right, but I cannot defend that performance,” Rosenior said. “It doesn’t represent this football club or what I demand from the group. That has to change immediately.”

The Chelsea boss admitted he was both angry and disappointed, taking responsibility while also demanding accountability from his squad. He stressed that conceding the goals in the manner they did was unacceptable and highlighted a worrying drop in intensity and commitment.

Despite Rosenior’s strong words, there appeared to be a difference in perspective within the squad. Defender Trevoh Chalobah offered a contrasting view, insisting the players had given everything physically and were simply fatigued after a demanding run of fixtures.

“I thought the boys were running their socks off,” Chalobah said. “Everyone in the dressing room is tired. It’s not about effort — we gave everything, but we were beaten.”

That disconnect between manager and players only adds to the growing tension surrounding Chelsea, who have now lost seven of their last eight matches in all competitions. With just one win in their last nine league games, the club has slipped to seventh place and is now at serious risk of missing out on European football entirely.

Attention now turns to the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds, a match that could define Rosenior’s immediate future. Another poor result would intensify the pressure on the Chelsea boss, who is already facing mounting scrutiny despite public backing from the club’s ownership.
