Barcelona coach wants his team to be clinical and “brave in attack” against a highly organised Diego Simeone side
Hansi Flick has backed his Barcelona side to overturn their Champions League deficit against Atletico Madrid, calling for bravery and belief ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final second leg.
Barcelona trail 2-0 after the first leg at Camp Nou, where a red card for Pau Cubarsi and a free-kick from Julian Alvarez put Atletico in control of the tie.
Despite the setback, Flick remains confident his team can respond at the Metropolitano.
“I have a feeling it will be completely different from previous matches against them because the atmosphere in the stadium will be incredible,” said Flick. “The fans know what they need, and it will be tough for us, but I believe in my team and what we can make happen, and it’s possible, why not? That’s what we need to focus on.”
The German coach said his team would need to be far more aggressive than they were in the first leg, particularly since they expect to face a highly organised Diego Simeone side.
“I know we’re playing against Atletico, a team with very good players, and we’ll need to defend very strongly but also be brave in attack, to attack, press and take advantage of every opportunity,” said Flick. “If you look at the last match, that was perhaps the big difference between them and us. Maybe tomorrow will be completely different, and that would make me happy.”
Barcelona’s preparations have been affected by squad concerns. Cubarsi is suspended, while Raphinha and Andreas Christensen remain sidelined through injury. Midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Gavi could feature, though Flick said final decisions would be made after training.
“Frenkie is playing better,” said Flick. “We’ll see how he performs today, but it will be difficult for him. Frenkie could even start; we’ll decide this afternoon.
“Gavi can play, of course. He’s a player who gives everything to this team and the club, and on the pitch he’s fearless, which is a very good thing, and we’ll see. Whether he starts in the eleven or not, we’ll see after training.”
Flick also stressed the importance of mentality as Barcelona attempt to stay in the competition.
“Mentality and attitude are important,” said Flick. “Tomorrow, every positive aspect will be important. We have to believe we can do it, and I think the team is on the right track. In matches against Atletico, we’re usually a better team.”
