Liam Rosenior criticizes Paul Tierney for disrupting Chelsea’s pre-match huddle before their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle, questioning the referee’s priorities.
Liam Rosenior has slammed referee Paul Tierney for gate-crashing Chelsea’s pre-match huddle before Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.
Tierney stood in the centre of the circle as Chelsea captain Reece James spoke to his team, seemingly refusing to move.
Rosenior said he will contact PGMOL, the referees’ body, to seek clarity on why Chelsea’s pre-game ritual was disrupted. “I want to protect my players,” Rosenior said. “I’m respectful to the game, but that was unacceptable.”
The incident overshadowed Newcastle’s win, which was secured by Anthony Gordon’s 18th-minute strike. Chelsea had dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Rosenior claimed Tierney was more focused on the huddle than his job, citing a possible penalty decision in the second half. “If Paul had focused more on his job, we’d have a penalty today,” Rosenior said.

The pre-match huddle has become a ritual under Rosenior, with players gathering in the centre circle to show unity and leadership. Rosenior accused Arsenal’s coaching staff of similar disrespect in January.
Rosenior’s comments come after a frustrating day for Chelsea, who saw their top-four hopes take a hit. Newcastle, meanwhile, secured a valuable win.
