Offer by the Swedish football association comes before the World Cup playoffs this March

Former Chelsea and Brighton coach Graham Potter has extended his contract as Sweden’s national team head coach, signing a deal that will keep him in charge until 2030.

Potter initially took over the role in October on a short-term basis following his departure from West Ham. At the time, the Swedish Football Association (SvFF) said his deal could automatically extend if the national side qualified for the World Cup.

However, with Sweden preparing for a crucial World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final against Ukraine this month, the federation has chosen to commit to Potter well in advance, offering him a four-year extension as a sign of confidence in his leadership.

The English coach has overseen two matches since taking charge, beginning his tenure with a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland before guiding Sweden to a 1-1 draw at home against Slovenia.

Despite those mixed results, the SvFF have made clear they believe Potter is the right figure to lead the national team into the next cycle.

“I am incredibly happy about the continued collaboration with Graham Potter, who is a solid person whose leadership I appreciate and have strong faith in,” said Niclas Carlnen, secretary general of SvFF.

“The long-term perspective gives players and managers peace of mind and the opportunity to create continuity in their activities with a view to future championships. Our national teams are of great importance to Swedish football and to many people around the country. Now we look forward to the coming years, but first and foremost, hopefully a World Cup summer.”

Potter built a reputation in the Premier League with his success at Brighton, before less successful stints with Chelse and West Ham. But he also spent successful periods in Swedish football earlier in his career.

Svff’s official in charge of the national team Kim Kallstrom also praised Potter’s early impact since arriving in the role, referencing in particular his personality and professionalism.

“Graham has already made a strong impression with his wonderful personality and professional attitude in his short time and we look forward to continuing our journey together,” Kallstrom said.

“His coaching background is based on experiences from a wide and unique range, everything from Swedish football to high international level with the complexity that exists there. The fact that this is now clear gives us security for the upcoming playoffs.”
