Forward injured after coming on against Getafe and could be out for up to eight months
Real Madrid have confirmed that forward Rodrygo has suffered a serious knee injury that is expected to sideline him for several months. The setback could rule the 25-year-old out of Brazil’s World Cup campaign this summer.
The Spanish club announced on Tuesday that medical tests revealed “a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament” as well as “a rupture of the lateral meniscus” in the Brazilian’s right knee.
Rodrygo is understood to have been managing discomfort prior to Monday night’s surprise 1-0 defeat to Getafe, when he was brought on with half an hour to go as Alvaro Arbeloa looked for solutions. His time on the pitch worsened the problem significantly.
Sources close to the player suggest that recovery may take up to eight months, although Madrid have not given a timeline and their medical staff will continue to assess the player’s progress throughout rehabilitation.
The injury represents a major blow both for the club and for Brazil. The national federation immediately released a message of support for the forward.
“The CBF expresses its solidarity with the athlete Rodrygo Goes, forward for Real Madrid and the Brazilian National Team, who suffered a serious injury during the match against Getafe in the Spanish League,” their statement read.
“Rodrygo sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament and the outer meniscus of his right knee. The CBF wishes the athlete a speedy recovery and that he returns to the pitch as soon as possible.”
