Bayer Leverkusen safely moved into the Champions League Round of 16 after a 0-0 draw with Olympiacos, securing a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Bayer Leverkusen secured their progression to the Champions League Round of 16 after a goalless draw at home against Olympiacos.

Following a comfortable 2-0 victory in the first leg, Bayer Leverkusen focused on defensive solidity to ensure there were no late surprises at the BayArena. The result maintains Leverkusen’s impressive record against Greek opposition, extending their unbeaten run to five matches in European competition.

The match started with Leverkusen nearly putting the tie beyond all doubt within the first five minutes. Patrik Schick, who was the hero of the first leg with a quickfire brace, came agonizingly close to adding another to his tally. His glancing header from a well-placed cross whistled just wide of the far post, serving as an early warning to the visitors that Leverkusen weren’t just going to sit back and defend their lead.

Despite the early pressure from the hosts, Olympiacos refused to crumble. After a tactical regrouping at halftime, José Luis Mendilibar’s side came out for the second half with renewed energy. They registered their first shot on target just five minutes after the restart when Gelson Martins forced Janis Blaswich into a sharp, low save. It was the first real sign of life from the Greek side, but the Leverkusen keeper handled it with total composure.

The game opened up slightly after the hour mark as both teams searched for a breakthrough. Alex Grimaldo, often the provider for Leverkusen, nearly turned goalscorer when his powerful strike rattled the woodwork, leaving the keeper stranded. Moments later, Gelson Martins threatened again at the other end, seeing his low effort deflected wide as the visitors tried desperately to ignite a late comeback.

As the clock ticked toward the final whistle, Olympiacos’ belief began to fade. The disciplined structure of the Leverkusen midfield and defence left the visitors with very few clear-cut opportunities.

A long-range effort from Lorenzo Scipioni in the closing stages was symbolic of their frustration; the strike rifled wide of the target, effectively signaling the end of their European journey for this season.

For Leverkusen, the lack of “goalmouth action” was likely exactly what Hjulmand had ordered. The team remained resolute and organized, claiming their fifth clean sheet of an impressive European campaign. By refusing to get drawn into a chaotic, end-to-end battle, the German side showed the kind of tactical maturity that makes them a dangerous opponent for anyone in the knockout rounds.

The focus now shifts to the Round of 16 draw. Leverkusen’s reward for their professional display is a potential tie against domestic rivals Bayern Munich or the current Premier League leaders, Arsenal.
