Federico Dimarco shrugged off “best in the world” claims after adding a record-breaking, three-assist display to his already impressive season
Federico Dimarco delivered another standout performance in Inter’s emphatic 5-0 win away to Sassuolo, but the Italian wing-back was quick to dismiss suggestions that he is currently the best wide defender in world football.

Despite producing an MVP-level display capped by three assists, Dimarco insisted individual labels mean little to him.
The 26-year-old was the driving force at the Mapei Stadium as Inter stretched their lead at the top of Serie A. Operating from left wing-back, Dimarco provided assists for Yann Bisseck, Marcus Thuram and Manuel Akanji, as five different players found the net in a dominant Nerazzurri performance.
In doing so, Dimarco rewrote Serie A history. No defender had ever recorded more than eight assists after 24 games in a single season, but the Inter man has recorded 11.
Yet when asked about his growing reputation, Dimarco was characteristically grounded. “I don’t feel like anything,” he told the media. “When you’re good, you’re a phenomenon, otherwise you’re poor. That’s football.”
Speaking later, he acknowledged that this may be his most productive season statistically, but stressed that the team’s goals and ambitions matter above all else. For Dimarco, the real measure of success is whether Inter remain at the top of the table come May, not how his numbers compare to anyone else’s.

Across Europe, Dimarco’s form inevitably invites comparison with some of the game’s elite left-backs and wing-backs. Last season, he was definitely among the best left-backs in the world and this season, he is showing his worth again, especially when compared to the likes of Grimaldo, Nuno Mendes and Cucurella.
There is still a lot of football to play this season but Dimarco can still state his claim for being the best or one of the best left-backs in the world. With six goals and 11 assists across all competitions to his name, it is expected to see him do more numbers and help Inter achieve their domestic and continental ambitions.
