Midfielder reveals he is in talks over contract extension

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai says there is no guarantees he stays at the club until the expiration of his contract or beyond.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2023 and his current deal runs out in 2028. He has been one of the club’s best players since he joined, was instrumental in their title-winning campaign last season, and has arguably been their best players this term amid their struggles. The player revealed he has had conversations with the club regarding his future.

“There are always talks,” Szoboszlai said. “You guys in the media make a lot for the people and keep on going because that’s your job. There have been talks but, for sure, not any decision has been made.

“There is always progress but no decision has been made and I’ll just keep on going every week, every training, giving my best for the team, for the fans. Let’s see what is going to happen in the future.

“Of course I am happy here but you know how football works and that is something everybody has to take into account.”

Szoboszlai has had a particularly rough time over the past couple of weeks, scoring the opener against League One side Barnsley in the FA Cup before giving away a huge chance with a poor flick, allowing Barnsley to score and get back in the game.

Against Burnley at the weekend he also missed a penalty, although Florian Wirtz eventually put Liverpool ahead, before Burnley equalised and held out for a draw.

“I missed a penalty but I’m going to keep on going,” Szoboszlai said. “I’m going to take the next one and I’m going to score I’m pretty sure.

“If Salah comes back he is the first penalty taker but until he comes back I’m the first penalty taker. He will give me some advice on what to think about when you miss one as he’s missed a couple of times, but he keeps on going and forgets what has happened.”

Regarding his mistake against Barnsley, the Hungarian said: “For me, personally, it’s a tough one. I made a mistake but I have to make it clear it wasn’t disrespectful in my opinion and I would do the same against Arsenal, [Manchester] City and against Chelsea as well.

“I didn’t want to give it back to [goalkeeper] Giorgi [Mamardashvili]. I wanted to keep going but I tried to pretend that was playing it back, just to make it clear.
