“We will see what happens at the end of the season,“ Guardiola says
Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford could leave the club in the summer only a year after he joined from Burnley.
Trafford returned to his boyhood club last summer in a £27m deal. He had spent eight years in Manchester before joining Burnley in 2023 at the age of 20. Last season, he impressed for the Clarets in the Championship and helped them to secure Premier League football, leading to a race last summer between Newcastle and City for his signature.
City ultimately won the race and signed him, but after some unconvincing performances at the start of the season, the club snapped up Gianluigi Donnarumma before the close of the transfer window. The Italian has remained the first choice since, with Trafford making only four appearances in cup games and one in the Champions League.
With things unlikely to change given the quality and experience of Donnarumma, a move in the summer, possibly to Newcastle may be on the cards.
When asked about the player on Tuesday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe called him “a very good goalkeeper” and said he was “a big fan” of Trafford.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola did not quite close the door on a move when the question was posed to him.
“We want him and what’s going to happen at the end of the season we will see,” said Guardiola. “I would like him to stay for many years here because he has the attributes to play in a big club like us.”
