Tottenham boss Thomas Frank admits Brennan Johnson’s £35m exit may have come at the wrong time as Spurs’ injury problems continue to mount.

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank has suggested that Brennan Johnson’s departure from the club may not have been ideally timed, particularly after Mohammed Kudus was forced off with an injury during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

Johnson completed a £35m move to Crystal Palace on Friday and made his debut for his new club in their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on the same day Spurs were held at home. His exit has further reduced Tottenham’s attacking options at a moment when injuries are beginning to pile up.

Kudus now joins an already lengthy list of absentees in north London, with Dejan Kulusevski, Dominic Solanke, and James Maddison all sidelined, while Xavi Simons missed the Sunderland match through suspension. The growing shortage of attacking players has raised questions about the club’s recent transfer decisions.

Speaking after the game, Frank insisted he stood by the choices made by the club but acknowledged that circumstances had shifted quickly. He explained that transfer decisions are often made with a broader perspective in mind, even if they appear poorly timed in the short term.

The Danish coach stressed that Johnson’s sale was agreed before Kudus suffered his injury and pointed out that the severity of the Ghanaian’s issue is still unclear. Frank added that opportunities to sell players do not always present themselves at convenient moments.

He also noted that Tottenham have not always been effective at capitalising on transfer opportunities in the past, suggesting that the club felt it was important to act when the chance arose, even if it has since left the squad stretched.

With Tottenham fans booing at full-time after another frustrating home result, Frank confirmed that the club are prepared to be active in the January transfer window. He admitted it is a challenging market but said Tottenham are alert and eager to find solutions that can strengthen the squad both immediately and in the long term.
