Youngster was hailed as the “future of Manchester United” by manager Ruben Amorim last week

Kobbie Mainoo intends to remain at Manchester United and fight for his place despite a difficult start to the season.

The 20-year-old midfielder has yet to start a Premier League match this term, playing just 212 minutes across 11 substitute appearances. His only start this season was in the ill-fated Carabao Cup clash against Grimsby Town.

Having once been seen as the future of United and England’s midfield, the lack of trust shown in the youngster so far has raised questions about his long-term prospects at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have been used ahead of the academy graduate, leaving Mainoo on the fringes. There was the promise of a first league start in December after Fernandes sustained a hamstring issue, but Mainoo himself was unfortunately also sidelined by a calf injury before that fixture against Aston Villa.

Despite rumours of a possible exit this January, Mainoo wants to stay at the club and revive his career, according to The Sun. He is understood to be focused on regaining full fitness and forcing his way back into Amorim’s plans rather than pushing for a move away.

Amorim said last week that Mainoo is the “future of Manchester United”, making clear that the youngster still has a future in the team. With debuts having already been given to youngster Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey over the festive period, Mainoo would have had chances to make his case in the side if he had not been injured.

It was always unlikely that United would allow the youngster to move away in January given their absences due to the Africa Cup of Nations. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are all currently on international duty and may not return until mid to late January.
