Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies opens up about the emotional and mental toll of his long injury layoff after suffering a cruciate ligament tear while on international duty with Canada.
Alphonso Davies has spoken candidly about the emotional struggle he endured during his lengthy spell on the sidelines, describing it as one of the toughest periods of his career.
More than eight months after suffering a cruciate ligament injury while playing for Canada, the Bayern Munich left-back finally returned to action in December, featuring in a Champions League match against Sporting CP.
In an interview with FC Bayern’s official club magazine, Davies revealed how devastated he felt when he first received the diagnosis, admitting the news left him emotionally drained.
“When I heard the diagnosis, all the energy went out of my body,” he said. “After the operation, I woke up, looked at my leg and couldn’t believe what had happened. Then the questions came — will I be the same again? Will I play again?”
The reality of the setback truly hit him in the days that followed surgery, as the Canadian international described breaking down emotionally during his first shower after the operation, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty.
A long and painful rehabilitation process followed, during which Davies struggled physically and mentally. He recalled sleepless nights, constant pain, and the frustration of repeating the same routine every day while being unable to play.
Looking back, Davies believes the injury changed his outlook on football and life, teaching him not to take anything for granted. Now back on the pitch, he says he plays with even greater appreciation, enjoyment, and determination, embracing every moment of the sport he loves.
