Absence also likely to rule the player out of Denmark’s crucial World Cup playoffs in March

Barcelona have been dealt a fresh defensive setback after confirming Andreas Christensen has suffered a partial tear of the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The injury occurred during a training session on Saturday, when the Denmark international twisted awkwardly and was forced to stop.

Barcelona said in a statement: “After tests carried out on the player, a conservative course of treatment has been chosen. The player’s recovery time will depend on his development.”

While the club did not place a timeframe on his absence, reports in Spain suggest Christensen could be sidelined for several months. The 29-year-old had only recently returned to full fitness after a calf problem in October that ruled him out for a fortnight.

Christensen was a regular figure for Denmark during the international windows this year. He started all of their World Cup qualifying matches in 2025, scoring once and providing two assists as Denmark finished second in their group to book a place in the playoffs.

The injury means his availability for his nation in those crucial playoffs is now in doubt. Denmark face North Macedonia on 26 March, with the winners set to meet either the Czech Republic or Ireland for a place at the World Cup in June.
