Alphonso Davies will make his Bundesliga comeback this weekend after tearing his ACL on international duty in March.
Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies is set to make his comeback this weekend, after coming off the bench in the team’s 3-1 Champions League win over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.
The Canadian captain has been included in the squad for Sunday’s home clash with rock-bottom Mainz, and is in line to play his first Bundesliga match since his injury.
Davies’ return is a welcome boost for Vincent Kompany’s high-flying Bayern Munich, who are already eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. The team’s blockbusting form means Kompany can afford to ease Davies back into the starting XI, and the wing-back is expected to make an impact on the left flank.
The 25-year-old is known for his lightning-fast speed and ability to bomb forward, making him a constant threat up front. In defence, Davies’ speed allows Bayern to play an even higher line, with the Canadian often seen chasing down and snuffing out potential counter threats.
Joshua Kimmich praised Davies’ hard work during his rehab, saying, “It was a difficult time for him, but he’s always brought positive energy. The way he went through his rehab was exemplary and outstanding.” Kimmich added, “He gives us a lot on and off the pitch.”
Davies’ return is not the only good news for Bayern, as Jamal Musiala is on track for a January return, and long-term absentee Hiroki Ito is also getting minutes. The team’s sporting director, Max Eberl, said the returnees mean Bayern will be unlikely to bring in anyone during the January transfer window.
“More players are coming back. Our transfers are coming from within,” Eberl said, adding, “we’ll essentially have three new signings.”
Davies himself is excited to be back, writing on social media, “Good to be back doing what I love the most.”
