In a thrilling Premier League encounter, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur battled to a 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park. The Magpies, who had started the match strongly, saw their six-match winning home run come to an end, while Spurs extended their winless streak to five games.
Newcastle began the match with a bang as they dominated the first half, with Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes causing problems for the Spurs’ defence. Lewis Miley registered the hosts’ first shot on target, but Guglielmo Vicario was equal to it.
Despite Newcastle’s dominance, Spurs responded well, with Lucas Bergvall’s inventive backheel from Mohammed Kudus’ cross brushing the top of the crossbar. The first half ended goalless, but Eddie Howe’s side came out strong after the break. Barnes forced a strong save from Vicario, and Kevin Danso’s clearance on the line kept out Nick Woltemade’s subsequent header.
Newcastle finally broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, with Bruno Guimaraes pouncing on a loose clearance to score a brilliant goal. However, Spurs equalised seven minutes later, with Cristian Romero diving in front of Dan Burn to meet Kudus’ cross and score with a thumping header.
The drama wasn’t over yet, as Rodrigo Bentancur’s hold on Burn was deemed enough for a penalty, and Anthony Gordon stepped up to score his first goal in the PL this season. But just when it seemed Newcastle would win, Romero produced an audacious overhead kick in stoppage time to earn Spurs an unlikely point.
The result leaves both teams in the bottom half of the table, with Spurs still winless in five and Newcastle seeing their winning streak come to an end. Despite the draw, Spurs will be pleased with their perseverance, while Newcastle will be disappointed to have dropped points at home.
