Punishment includes a fine and a suspended ban on away ticket sales in Uefa competitions

Atletico Madrid have been sanctioned by Uefa for racist and extremist behaviour by their supporters during last month’s Champions League match against Arsenal.

The Spanish club’s fans were found to have made monkey gestures and noises, along with Nazi salutes, during the October fixture at the Emirates Stadium.

European football’s governing body confirmed on Thursday that Atletico have been fined €30,000. The Spanish club were also handed a suspended ban on away ticket sales in Uefa competitions.

The suspended sanction means that, if there is a repeat offence within a year, the club would be barred from selling tickets to away supporters for one European game. In other words, they would travel without supporters for that game.

The punishment was issued by Uefa’s control, ethics and disciplinary body for what it described as “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour”.

Uefa rules dictate that clubs are responsible for controlling their fans, meaning that punishment for any wrong behaviour is given to the clubs.

Atletico were fined a further €10,000 for objects being thrown from the stands during the same game.
