Head coach demands improvements and says his team need to be more aggressive

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has warned that his team must tighten up defensively if they are to continue improving.

United are unbeaten in their last four matches in all competitions, winning three, but they have managed only one clean sheet all season. Performances have shown signs of progress but Amorim admitted their defensive record is a serious concern.

“It’s a problem, especially if you see the league nowadays,” said United’s head coach. “The team that is winning all the games is not suffering, is not conceding goals, maybe some shots on target.

“And that is a big thing, especially when you have talented players. If you defend well, in one opportunity you can score a goal and win a game.”

United have conceded only one goal less than they have scored so far this season, with their tally of 16 goals conceded unmatched among the Premier League’s current top 10.

“I think it’s more a team thing,” said Amorim. “We need to defend better. We need to be more aggressive. And that part of the energy, when we have the full energy in every ball, we defend better. So everything is connected.

“But of course, we have a lot to do. We cannot suffer the amount of goals that we are suffering, and that is the thing that we need to improve.”
