Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank plays down an awkward post-match scene involving defenders Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence after the 1-0 loss to Chelsea.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Thomas Frank is trying to keep things in perspective after the awkward scene involving defenders Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence following Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Chelsea.
The two players headed straight down the tunnel, ignoring Frank’s request to acknowledge the frustrated fans.
Frank downplayed the incident, saying it’s a small issue and both players are doing their best. “I think that is one of the small issues. We have Micky and Djed who are doing everything they can,” Frank said.
The manager remained on the pitch, applauding the crowd to a mixed reaction. Spurs have won only one of five home games in the Premier League this season under Frank, and their lack of fluency in the final third is a concern.
Frank acknowledged the fans’ frustration but emphasized that Chelsea were better than Spurs on the day. “They (the fans) did everything they could to back us in a game that we didn’t perform well in. Chelsea were better than us,” he said.
Spurs’ struggles in front of goal continue, with no goals scored in their last two league games. Frank is confident that the team’s attacking woes will be resolved, saying, “I think every team I’ve coached has scored a lot of goals. It will happen again in the future here.”
Despite the setbacks, Frank has overseen progress since last season’s struggles under Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs have a chance to respond with back-to-back home games against Copenhagen in the Champions League and Manchester United in the league.
