Arne Slot must avoid negativity in press conferences, pundit warns

Former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp has urged the club to show the character that helped them win the league last season if they are to overcome a dreadful run of form.

The Reds have lost six of their last seven game in all competitions after being defeated by Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday. They have also lost four successive Premier League games and dropped to seventh place, putting their title defence in doubt.

There are tough games to come over the next week. After a tricky test against an in-form Aston Villa at the weekend, Arne Slot’s team will face Real Madrid and then Manchester City before the international break.

“They climbed the mountain last season and were absolutely sensational,” said Redknapp. “Now they’ve got to go back to that character they showed when they won the title and stick together and get results.

“When you ask what is going wrong with Liverpool, there are so many things. It’s not just the defence, it’s not just the midfield or the forwards, it is so many things. It is everything right now.

“They’ve got to show some character because they have some really tough games ahead.”

The Sky Sports pundit warned Slot that some of his choices were doing more harm than good for his team at the moment, particularly his comments in press conferences.

“Honesty’s a great thing – it’s great to come out and talk about how the team is doing,” said Redknapp.

“But right now, saying ‘We can’t play against a team with a low block. We can’t defend against set-pieces’, that will transmit to the players and you are giving them a massive out. That’s not a great idea right now.

“I think for Arne right now, there’s a lot of negative chat that’s coming out. I just don’t want to hear that too much. The fans don’t want to hear it.”
