The funds will be used to establish a grassroots football programme in his honour
Liverpool have announced that over £225,000 has been raised by supporters in memory of Diogo Jota.
All funds raised in the player’s name have been donated to the LFC Foundation, which will use them to establish a grassroots football programme in Jota’s honour.
There are also plans to create a sculpture from recycled materials left in tribute to the forward. The sculpture will form part of a permanent memorial for Jota at Anfield.
The player’s No 20 shirt has already been retired at all levels of the club. A mural of him has also been designed at Anfield, and manager Arne Slot confirmed that Liverpool would honour his contract in full, with the payments to be made to his family.
Jota tragically died in a car accident in July, alongside his brother Andre Silva, while travelling back from Portugal to Liverpool ahead of pre-season training. The 28-year-old’s death sent shockwaves through the footballing world and he has been celebrated by key figures and fans across the sport.
