Kairat Almaty 0-5 Real Madrid: Los Blancos quickly get back to winning ways after derby defeat

Real Madrid put five goals past Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty in the Champions League on Tuesday night, in their first outing after the disappointing 5-2 defeat against local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Madrid had travelled 13 hours for their longest away trip in Europe’s top competition. Attacking genius Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick before goals from Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz completed the rout.

Kairat gave away a needless penalty just before the half hour after goalkeeper Sherkhan Kalmurza fouled Franco Mastantuono, and Mbappe converted from the spot to open the scoring.

The first half ended with Madrid only a goal up and Kairat had a few nice moments despite the possession overwhelmingly in favour of the away side. Then Mbappe scored twice a few minutes before and after the hour mark to grab his hat-trick and conclude the game as a competition, before late goals from Camavinga and Diaz.

The win leaves Madrid with maximum points from their first two matches in the competition.

In his post-match conference, Mbappe said he should have been more clinical despite scoring a hat-trick.

“A player like me, when I have five chances I should score five goals,” said Mbappe. “Today, I scored three, and that’s good, but I could have scored more. I’ll keep working to be more clinical in front of goal.”

Despite getting back to winning ways following the loss to Atletico, Madrid’s star forward said the win should not take the defeat at the Metropolitano out of their minds.

“You should never forget, we can’t forget what happened this weekend,” said Mbappe. “This is another competition, but we have to keep thinking about what happened, and work to be better so as not to experience another night like that.”
