Arsenal’s executive vice-chairman Tim Lewis is set to leave his position, marking the end of a long period of involvement with the Kroenke family.
Tim Lewis, Arsenal’s executive vice-chairman, is preparing to step down from his role, creating a significant change in the club’s leadership structure. Lewis, 62, has been closely associated with the Kroenke family for many years, playing a key role in guiding Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) on its investment in Arsenal.
Lewis’s involvement with Arsenal dates back to 2007, when he advised Stan Kroenke on his initial purchase of 9.9% of the club from ITV. He continued to play a central role as Kroenke gained majority ownership in 2011 and assumed complete control in 2018. Lewis’s duties grew beyond his original legal advisory role, and he became a trusted voice within the ownership group, influencing the club’s decision-making processes.
One of Lewis’s notable contributions was his strong support for financial fair play rules, which has been a crucial aspect of Arsenal’s financial strategy. He was also instrumental in the club’s ambitious transfer moves, working closely with manager Mikel Arteta to identify and recruit top talent. Lewis’s close relationship with Arteta proved vital, particularly during talks for the manager’s three-year contract extension in 2022.
Lewis joined the Arsenal board as a director in September 2020 and was promoted to executive vice-chairman in March 2023. His departure will create a significant void in the club’s leadership, but the Kroenke family is expected to tighten their grip on the club’s direction.
Two more KSE representatives are expected to join the board, along with Ben Winston, a film director and long-time Arsenal season ticket holder.
Josh Kroenke, 45, has assumed a more prominent role at the club in recent years and will continue to do so.
Meanwhile, Richard Garlick will move into the role of Chief Executive Officer, having previously served as director of football operations. Garlick’s appointment marks a new era in Arsenal’s leadership, with the club looking to build on its recent successes.
