Club say initial scans showed the 26-year-old would not be available for the weekend

Manchester City will be without Omar Marmoush for Sunday’s derby against Manchester United after the forward sustained a knee injury while on international duty with Egypt.

Marmoush was subbed off in the ninth minute of Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on Tuesday, after he had gone down from a challenge in the fourth minute. Team doctors later confirmed bruising to a knee ligament.

City said in a statement on Wednesday that initial scans carried out in Egypt showed the 26-year-old would not be available for the weekend, but they added he would “return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation”.

Marmoush joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for £59m and contributed eight goals and four assists across all competitions. He is yet to score this campaign.

The loss adds to Pep Guardiola’s mounting injury concerns. Rayan Cherki and Mateo Kovacic are both sidelined with long-term problems, while Phil Foden and Savinho remain doubts.

City have endured a difficult start to the season, winning only once and losing twice in their opening three fixtures. They currently sit in 13th place in the Premier League table.
