Goalkeeper’s exit will leave United with a few more goalkeeping questions to answer
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to leave Old Trafford for the rest of the season after agreeing to join Trabzonspor on loan.
The Cameroon international will travel to Turkey after completing international duty, with Cameroon facing Cape Verde in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. He featured in their 3-0 win over Eswatini last week.
Reports emerged on Saturday that United were in discussions with Trabzonspor over a deal for the 29-year-old, but any move was going to be dependent on Onana giving the green light.
The deal comes with no loan fee or purchase option, but the Turkish club will cover the player’s wages in full. Onana will also reportedly earn close to double his Old Trafford salary once performance bonuses are included, according to the terms offered by Trabzonspor.
Onana joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 but has struggled to impress, making a series of high-profile errors that have dearly cost his team. However, his exit will leave United with a few more questions to answer, as Ruben Amorim will have to decide whether to continue with the promising but unreliable Altay Bayindir, or throw new and inexperienced signing Senne Lammens in at the deep end.
Trabzonspor are keen to register Onana before the Turkish transfer window closes on 12 September. If registered in time, the player could feature in their Super Lig meeting with Fenerbahce on 14 September.
