Michael Carrick’s attempt to restore order at Old Trafford suffered another serious blow as Bournemouth handed his side a 3-0 defeat that raised fresh questions about his future.

Manchester United arrived at the game under pressure after their 4-1 defeat by Como in midweek. The result had exposed problems on the pitch, but the fallout went beyond football after Bruno Fernandes criticised the team’s tactics and Lisandro Martinez was involved in a separate dispute with director of football Jason Wilcox.

Carrick responded by leaving Fernandes out of his starting line-up for what he described as reasons related to pure football. The United captain remained on the bench throughout the game, but his absence did little to improve a team that struggled to create chances or defend with any real authority.

The defeat also extended United’s winless run to eight games. Their last victory came on 10 September, and with the club hovering above the relegation zone, the prospect of a difficult fight for survival is becoming harder to dismiss.

Bournemouth arrived in Manchester with considerably more confidence. Their victory made it four wins in a row and underlined the growing gap between a side moving in the right direction and a United team that appears to have lost its way.

The visitors threatened early, with Rayan delivering a cross that nearly found Evanilson before Leny Yoro cleared the danger. United offered little in response. Even when Yoro combined with Youri Tielemans and found Diogo Dalot, the move failed to produce a meaningful chance.

Poor passing and a lack of composure soon became familiar features of the home side’s performance. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens repeatedly sent the ball forward without finding a teammate, and Harry Maguire struggled to bring calm to the defence. Dalot’s wild effort from distance was the only shot United managed in the opening half-hour.

Bournemouth needed little encouragement to expose those weaknesses. Their opening goal came after Ayden Heaven caught Evanilson with a reckless scissor challenge and was shown a yellow card. United survived that incident, but they failed to deal with the free-kick that followed.

Justin Kluivert delivered the ball into the penalty area from the right, and Rayan was left unmarked to finish from close range. The Brazilian’s goal punished United for another defensive lapse and gave Bournemouth a deserved lead.

The travelling supporters responded with chants calling for Carrick to be sacked. Their mood darkened further just before half-time, when United handed Bournemouth a second goal through another avoidable mistake.

Yoro slipped near his own penalty area and allowed Adrien Truffert to collect the loose ball. The Bournemouth defender squared his pass for Marcus Tavernier, who slid it into the net in the 43rd minute.

United’s supporters unfurled a banner bearing the word “STANDARDS”, with images of former club greats Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and Roy Keane. The message was clear. The team on the pitch was falling well short of the expectations set by those who had come before them.

Carrick made a change at half-time, replacing Tielemans with Matheus Cunha in an attempt to give United more attacking threat. Yet the hosts continued to look short of ideas, and Bournemouth remained dangerous whenever they moved forward.

Rayan should have made it 3-0 when another opening presented itself, but his weak effort failed to trouble Lammens. The miss briefly offered United a lifeline, although there was little evidence that they could take advantage.

Bournemouth soon settled the contest. Lammens rushed out of his goal to intercept a through ball, but Evanilson reached it first and rounded the goalkeeper. From a difficult angle on the right, the Brazilian curled his finish into the unguarded net to make it 3-0.
