The match came shortly after Atalanta’s midweek Champions League elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich, with the hosts also looking to improve their domestic form following a run of just two points from three games.
The occasion was particularly significant for De Roon, who made his 436th appearance for Atalanta, becoming the club’s all-time record holder.
Early chances fell Atalanta’s way, with Nikola Krstović forcing a save from goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipò. A dangerous move also saw Zappacosta’s low delivery across goal blocked heroically by Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro before Ederson could finish.
The breakthrough eventually arrived when Zappacosta fired a low drive from the edge of the area. The effort took a slight deflection, wrong-footing Montipò and finding the bottom corner to give Atalanta the lead.
Verona nearly responded immediately after the restart, but Marco Carnesecchi produced a brilliant reaction save to deny Kieron Bowie from close range. Atalanta later came close to doubling their advantage, with Krstović hitting the crossbar after being played through by De Ketelaere.

The visitors pushed for an equalizer late on, with Gift Orban missing a golden opportunity and Rafik Belghali also going close. However, Atalanta held firm to secure an important victory that keeps their Serie A hopes alive.
