Midfielder expected to be out until February

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has backed his teammate Gavi to come back better and stronger after the midfielder was ruled out for up to five months following knee surgery.

The 21-year-old had an operation on his right meniscus on Tuesday, after Barcelona’s medical staff concluded that it could not be avoided.

The setback comes less than a year after he returned from a serious ACL injury that ruled him out for over 10 months. The news has been met with disappointment inside the Barcelona dressing room.

Yamal shared a photo on Instagram of him and Gavi in a hug and included a message of support.

“My warrior, I have no doubt you’ll soon be back as the best you ever were,” wrote Yamal. “Nothing can stop you, we’re all waiting for you. Stay strong, ‘tt’, I love you.”

Gavi has only featured twice so far this season for Barcelona, coming off the bench for two matches in August before being ruled out of the trip to Rayo Vallecano after he complained about his knee. He is expected to be out until February.
