Forward joined the national side a day late due to the flu

Germany forward Nick Woltemade has resumed light training after missing the start of the national team’s camp through illness, the German Football Association confirmed on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old was unable to join the squad at their training base in Herzogenaurach on Monday due to a flu. He then joined up later on Tuesday but missed team training.

The confirmation is he has returned to individual work for now rather than training with the team. Germany play Luxembourg and then Northern Ireland in their World Cup qualifying matches this international window.

Woltemade joined Newcastle from VfB Stuttgart last summer and has impressed in his first months in England. He has scored in both the Premier League and Europa League, including a wonder penalty in the last game that has been described as one of the best in Premier League history.

He is expected to rejoin full training before Friday’s fixture against Luxembourg in Frankfurt.

Germany sit third in qualifying group A with three points from their opening two matches.

After the game against Luxembourg they will travel to Belfast to face Northern Ireland, who are level on points but ahead on goal difference. Slovakia currently lead the group with six points.
