Manager Eddie Howe says striker’s knee problem to take “slightly longer than first thought”
A debut for Yoane Wissa at Newcastle has been extended after manager Eddie Howe confirmed the striker needs more time to recover from his knee injury.
The £55m signing arrived from Brentford on deadline day but has yet to feature for the club. He was expected to make his debut against Brighton later this month but will now miss at least five more matches.
Howe confirmed the DR Congo international has seen a specialist again, with his return pushed back until early November.
Wissa suffered the injury on international duty just a week after joining the club, before he had even trained with Howe’s squad.
“Yoane saw a specialist again for a check-up yesterday, and we’re probably looking at eight weeks rather than six from the point of the injury,” Howe said.
“It’s no recurrence, no problem with the knee, just slightly longer than first thought.”
In Wissa’s absence, fellow summer signing Nick Woltemade has led the line with success, scoring three times in four Premier League starts.
His form has eased some pressure but Newcastle remain short in attacking options with a busy run of fixtures ahead.
