New signing Hugo Ekitike also made his first appearance for Liverpool
Florian Wirtz scored his first goal in Liverpool colours as Arne Slot’s side came from behind to beat Yokohama F. Marinos 3-1 in Japan, wrapping up their pre-season tour of Asia on a high note.
The match went ahead at Nissan Stadium despite earlier fears over a tsunami warning issued after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern coast.
Local authorities cleared the fixture to proceed after confirming conditions were safe.
After a goalless first half, Yokohama opened the scoring in the second through Asahi Uenaka, but Liverpool responded with three goals to turn things around.
Wirtz, Liverpool’s £116m signing from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer, struck the equaliser from close range after Mohamed Salah combined well with Curtis Jones on the right and cut the ball back across goal.
Treymaurice Nyoni then gave Liverpool the lead when he slid in to finish a delicious cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement Jeremie Frimpong.
The pick of the goals came late on when youngster Rio Ngumoha went on a brilliant run, skipped past two defenders and fired into the far corner.
New signing Hugo Ekitike made his first appearance for Liverpool, having joined from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69m deal. The French striker nearly marked his debut with a goal, attempting a cheeky backheel in the first half that drifted just wide.
Cody Gakpo also hit the woodwork, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili made a crucial save to deny Jun Amano.
It was a positive end to the Asia tour after the club’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in their previous outing. Slot’s side will now return to England ahead of two back-to-back home friendlies against Athletic Club at Anfield on 4 August.
