Club have a £60m-per-year agreement with the German manufacturer but wore their Nike kit in the pre-season friendly against Preston North End
Liverpool have started their pre-season activities this summer wearing last season’s Nike kit, despite having signed a new multi-year deal with Adidas.
This is because the club’s £60m-per-year agreement with the German manufacturer, announced in March, is set to officially commence on 1 August. Any fixtures played prior to that date fall under the terms of the Nike agreement. Since Liverpool have returned to action in July, they will continue to wear Nike gear temporarily.
The Premier League champions wore their old kit in Sunday’s pre-season friendly at Preston North End, which they won 3-1. They will also don the kit for two upcoming fixtures in Asia this month. Recent high-profile signings Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong were both announced sporting the old Nike home shirt.
Liverpool’s upcoming July pre-season fixtures are matches against AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos, which form part of their Asia tour. Their first game in the new Adidas kit will be against Athletic Club at Anfield on 4 August, followed by the Community Shield match against Crystal Palace at Wembley six days later.
Adidas were Liverpool’s kit suppliers from 2006 to 2012. The switch back to the three stripes marks the end of their five-year agreement with Nike, which began in the 2020-21 season.
