Club are exploring the conditions of a possible deal for Gyokeres, with nothing is advanced at this stage
Manchester United have made initial contact with Sporting regarding a potential move for striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Red Devils are in the market for a new forward this summer, and Gyokeres has emerged as a serious option following another prolific season in Portugal.
The Sweden international, who scored 39 goals across all competitions last season, is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe. While his official release clause is believed to exceed £80 million, a gentleman’s agreement between the player and Sporting could see him move for a reduced fee in the region of £60 million.
United are only exploring the conditions of a potential deal and nothing is advanced yet, according to Sky Sports. The club want to understand the figures required for a possible transfer by speaking with the player’s representatives.
They will then decide if they are financially able to do a deal. While the player’s transfer fee is not expected to be a problem – Gyokeres is available at around £60 million – the player’s salary expectations might make a deal difficult to do.
United’s interest comes amid concerns over their current attacking options. The club signed Rasmus Hojlund for £72 million from Atalanta in 2023, but the player’s goalscoring form in the Premier League has been far from impressive.
Last season, Hojlund managed only four league goals in 32 appearances, with over 2000 minutes played.
However, despite recent speculation linking Hojlund with a move to Inter Milan, United’s pursuit of a new striker is understood to be independent of the Dane’s future. United’s transfer department have the No 9 position high on their list for the summer regardless of whether Hojlund stays or leaves the club.
Gyokeres previously played under United head coach Ruben Amorim at Sporting and has reportedly been tracked by the club’s scouts throughout the past campaign.
Other forwards are on United’s radar, including Randal Kolo Muani, although the Frenchman has expressed his desire to remain at Juventus.
