Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario expressed pride in his team’s performance despite losing to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, saying they followed Thomas Frank’s game plan to the letter.

Tottenham Hotspur’s UEFA Super Cup dreams were shattered in a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to PSG.  Despite taking a 2-0 lead, the Spurs were pegged back by PSG’s determined comeback, with Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos scoring crucial goals. The match ultimately went to penalties, where PSG emerged victorious.

Guglielmo Vicario, Tottenham’s Italian goalkeeper, was born and raised in Udine, the city where the match took place. Despite the disappointment of defeat, Vicario praised his team’s effort, saying, “I think we did what we set out to do, from start to finish. We were close, but it was not enough.” Vicario’s comments highlight the team’s commitment to Thomas Frank’s game plan.

The match saw Tottenham take an early lead, with Micky Van de Ven scoring a rebound goal after Lucas Chevalier tipped Joao Palhinha’s effort onto the crossbar.

Cristian Romero then doubled the lead with a header from Pedro Porro’s free-kick, which Chevalier failed to keep out. However, PSG fought back, with Lee Kang-in scoring a stunning goal from distance and Goncalo Ramos equalizing in stoppage time.

Vicario acknowledged that PSG’s quality and luck played a significant role in the outcome. “Of course, PSG have quality and you need a bit of luck in football,” he said. “It’s a learning experience and we take it going forward.” Despite the defeat, Vicario expressed pride in his team’s performance, saying they followed Thomas Frank’s instructions to the letter.

The penalty shootout saw Vitinha drill wide for PSG, giving Tottenham an early advantage.

However, Chevalier parried Van de Ven’s spot-kick, and Mathys Tel’s poor blast wide ultimately sealed the win for PSG. The victory marked PSG’s fifth trophy of 2025, following their Champions League, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France wins.

Vicario reflected on the team’s adaptation to Thomas Frank’s coaching style, saying, “We followed to the letter what Thomas had asked us to do and what we tested in training.” He added that the team’s approach had worked, as they hurt PSG twice in set-piece situations and created other scoring opportunities.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, Vicario remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.

“I am proud of these lads, because at the end of the day, starting with the idea of playing in a certain way and seeing that through, it ought to give us strength going forward,” he said. The team’s performance in the UEFA Super Cup has given fans reason to be hopeful about the season ahead.
