Tottenham Hotspur bow out of the Champions League despite a thrilling 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid. Interim boss Igor Tudor insists the performance proves Spurs can survive the drop.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League journey came to an end on Wednesday night, but the manner of their exit has provided a much-needed spark for their stuttering season.

Despite securing a spirited 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in North London, Tottenham fell 7-5 on aggregate following a disastrous first-leg showing in Spain. For interim manager Igor Tudor, however, the result was less about the tournament exit and more about a team finally rediscovering its competitive soul at a critical juncture.

The atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was electric, marking a stark contrast to the gloom that followed the sacking of Thomas Frank and Tudor’s initial four-game losing streak. A gritty weekend draw at Liverpool followed by this defiant European win suggests that the squad is finally responding to Tudor’s demands. “The sensations are mixed,” Tudor admitted after the whistle. “You don’t like to go out, but the energy was really nice. The players believed, and you could see that the performance level has significantly improved.”

The victory was made even more impressive by the thin margins Tudor is working with regarding squad fitness. Key figures like Lucas Bergvall, Destiny Udogie, and Conor Gallagher were restricted to 20-minute cameos on medical advice, forcing a makeshift XI to carry the load against Diego Simeone’s side.

Tudor emphasized that the value of the performance was heightened by these constraints, noting that the morale boost from beating a continental giant is worth a lot to the squad.

While Tottenham celebrated a moral victory, Atletico Madrid navigated a surprisingly tense evening to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash against Barcelona. Julian Alvarez, who opened the scoring for the visitors, conceded that the Spanish side struggled to manage their three-goal cushion from the first leg.

After surviving the London onslaught, Simeone’s men will need a tactical reset before facing a rampant Barca side that recently dismantled Newcastle 7-2.

For Tottenham, the focus now shifts abruptly from European nights to Premier League survival. Sitting just one point above the relegation zone, Tottenham face a monumental six-pointer against Nottingham Forest this Sunday. While Tudor downplayed the idea that the Forest match would be the final decider of their season, the momentum gathered from the Atletico win has transformed a team that looked destined for the drop into one that believes it can fight its way to safety.
