Despite obtaining a Jamaican passport, Greenwood is still holding off on completing Fifa’s change of association process

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has said Mason Greenwood is not under consideration for selection.

The 23-year-old Marseille striker has been linked with a potential return to the England fold after delaying a formal switch to represent Jamaica. But Tuchel dismissed the idea, confirming he has had no contact with the player.

“I have not spoken to him or his camp,” Tuchel said on Friday. “My understanding was that he is trying to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix and he is not in our thoughts for the team.”

Greenwood, capped once by England in 2020, was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 after images and videos involving a young woman were posted online. He later faced charges in court related to the incident before the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023.

He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe before moving permanently to Marseille, where he scored 21 goals to in Ligue 1 to finish joint-top of the scorers’ chart last season.

However, despite obtaining a Jamaican passport, Greenwood is still holding off on completing Fifa’s change of association process.

Jamaica manager Steve McClaren admitted frustration at the forward’s delay, having hoped to call up Greenwood for World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago this month.

“We acquired a passport and expected him in this camp,” McClaren said. “But in conversations with his family, he is not going to commit at this time to anybody. He’s taking his time over that, so it’s a little bit disappointing.”

Greenwood’s only appearance for England came in September 2020, when he made his debut against Iceland in the Nations League. He was then sent home, alongside Phil Foden, for breaching Uefa’s Covid-19 protocols during that camp.

The forward was later named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional Euro 2020 squad but withdrew with injury. Since then, his international career has remained on hold, and Tuchel’s latest remarks suggest an England recall is not on the table.

McClaren said: “We probably have to be more patient, but we will keep the contact, we will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica.”
