England boss Thomas Tuchel admits omission of Trent Alexander-Arnold may be unfair as he explains selection decisions ahead of World Cup squad.

Thomas Tuchel has admitted his decision to leave out Trent Alexander-Arnold from the latest England national football team squad may have been a degree unfair.

Despite naming a 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley, the Real Madrid right-back was omitted, reducing his chances of making the upcoming World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold was overlooked even after Jarrell Quansah withdrew through injury, with Ben White called up instead. White had not featured for England since leaving the 2022 World Cup early and subsequently making himself unavailable under former boss Gareth Southgate.

Tuchel described the decision as a purely sporting one, acknowledging it was difficult and potentially harsh. He confirmed he spoke directly with Alexander-Arnold to explain the reasoning and asked the player to accept the situation.

The omission comes despite Alexander-Arnold’s improving form at Real Madrid, where he has reportedly displaced Dani Carvajal under coach Álvaro Arbeloa and impressed in a Champions League win over Manchester City.

Tuchel defended the recall of White, noting the defender’s immediate and enthusiastic response when asked about returning to international duty. He also praised White’s attitude and performances in training camp.

The German coach added that several players more certain of World Cup selection, including captain Harry Kane, have been allowed to skip the Uruguay fixture, creating opportunities for others. That opens the door for strikers Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to compete for a supporting role behind Kane, as Tuchel evaluates his attacking options ahead of the tournament.
